Think Like an Entrepreneur

Thinking like an entrepreneur can be tricky for those of us that have been “employees” our whole lives. We haven’t ever had to think any different than, “I get up, go to my job, they tell me what to do, and I get a paycheck”.

Entrepreneurship my friend is a completely different game, which means you need to THINK in a completely different way.

Be totally honest with yourself...

Q1. On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you feel about money?

1 = "it's a huge stress in my life"

10 = "it's only a matter of time until I'm Oprah rich!"

Q.2 On a scale of 1 to 10 how in control of your life do you feel right now?

1 = "I have no control"

10 = "I have full control over my life"

Q.3 On a scale of 1 to 10 how committed are you to growing a successful business?

1 = "I hope I can"

10 = "I'll die trying if I have to"

What is level 10 to you?

This concept of the level 10 you is a version of you who has everything that you say you want. It's a future version of you you're working towards right now, the one who has all the money you want, the health you want, the relationships you want, the Inner Circle you want, the team you want, the opportunities you want, the success you want, and the self-esteem you want.

Now, that last one is a biggie because here's the truth. We struggle with feeling like we are enough, smart enough, ready enough, worthy enough, fit enough, young enough, old enough, committed enough, but the point is you already are enough and all of these conditions you are setting for yourself is doing nothing but delaying your progress and keeping you stuck right where you are today.

Do you remember when you were in high school and everything seemed like a huge deal in the moment? Your Social Circle or lack thereof felt like a huge deal. Your identity and your relationships back then felt like such a huge freaking deal. Now that you're an adult, do any of those things seem like a big deal anymore? Of course not!

Now as a teenager, if you had the foresight to know where you would be today, do you still think that those challenges would have been that big of a deal? Probably not. That is how I want you to start thinking about yourself today.

Do you have the foresight to know that there's a level 10 version of you who has achieved everything you say you want to achieve? How do you think that person would deal with your current struggles? THEY would think you're making a way bigger deal out of it and would likely think that you're attaching a disempowering meaning or interpretation it.

Would the level-ten you worry about the current struggles you're facing as you try to get your business off the ground or would they view them  as a mere speed bump, a necessary obstacle you have to overcome or even a lesson you needed to learn before the next opportunity or idea presented itself to you?

What I know for sure is that the level 10 you would not make your current obstacles or problems mean that you aren't good enough or cut out to be an entrepreneur. No one can ever predict the future or how it's going to look but they can choose how they want to show up and act now. And I bet you any money if you were to look like that version of you right now you would know instinctively that you're not operating from level 10 you.

Let’s do a quick exercise.

First, identify a struggle in your business. Maybe you haven't even started your business because you're worried you'll fail and you don't want people in your life to see that. Or maybe you started your business and keep asking yourself, “Who am I to be doing this?” Write it down on a piece of paper without over-thinking.

How have you shown up in regards to solving this problem? Give yourself an honest rating of 1 to 10 and go with your gut here don't overthink it. Spoiler alert if you were a 10 this problem would not exist

Finally, list three actions level 10 you would take to solve this problem.

Write them down and commit to executing on those three actions over the next 7 days.

When you approach any obstacles from a place of level 10 thinking you rise above your current circumstances, empower yourself and take a noticeable step to who you truly want to be and that is how the most successful entrepreneurs think.

What do you currently believe about money?

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge and money is the lifeblood of your business. So if you currently have disempowering beliefs about money, you will sabotage your success whether you mean to or not. Many entrepreneurs don't realize or think about the feelings they are feeling about money, which is the number one reason they don't have as much of it as they like. Harsh, but true.

Another quick exercise.

  • Take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle or open up a doc on your computer
  • Add "Limiting Money Beliefs" to the top of the left column
  • And "Empowering Money Beliefs" at the top of the right column
  • Choose 5 limiting money beliefs that you believe right now...and be honest with yourself, you can’t shift it if you don’t acknowledge it.

Here are a few, use the ones that stand out to you the most or write down your own:

  • Money doesn’t grow on trees
  • Money is a limited resource
  • I have to work harder to make more money
  • My family and friends won’t like me if I have more money than them
  • Rich people are greedy
  • I don’t deserve more money
  • I would feel bad having a lot of money when so many people live in poverty
  • If I make more I am taking away from someone else
  • More money more problems

In the right hand column of your paper, choose 5 empowering money beliefs that best replace the limiting ones you just wrote.

  • Here are a few ideas, or choose your own:
  • The more problems I solve, the more money I make
  • The more money I make the less I have to work
  • When I have lots of money I can share with my family and friends and they will love me for it
  • You can be rich and happy
  • It is my birthright to have an abundant life that includes wealth
  • Having more money means I can help more people
  • Money is everywhere and making it is easy

Stick your written or printed empowering beliefs up somewhere in your home so you’re reminded your new and different view about money

I truly believe that you will experience that which you believe and if you believe that money is hard to come by or that money doesn't grow on trees, that is what you'll experience.

Your list should show you your beliefs about money. When those thoughts come up again you can catch them in the moment and replace them with the new beliefs you created in the exercise.

Check-in with yourself:

How was I thinking?
Was I complaining about something, someone or the situation?
Was I stressing about the lack of money or doubting myself?
What was I just thinking about?

This will disrupt your thought pattern so you can check in with yourself to see what was triggering it. Once you are aware of the trigger, you can cancel that.

If you have any negative thoughts, you can consciously replace it with the new belief you want to believe. Some of my go-to money beliefs are:

  • Money is fun
  • Money is easy to make
  • Money is always flowing to me
  • Money is a limitless resource and there is more than enough for everyone

I know that sounds kind of woo but this s*** works. If you want to build the kind of business you want, you need to learn how to manage your thoughts.

What are you thinking into reality?

We are the ones who create the world. We are the dreamers, the innovators, the Visionaries, the creators, and big drivers of the economy. We have a message that needs to be heard. There’s a group of people who need what it is we're creating. So to show up and shine as our best selves, we need to ensure that our beliefs around money are empowering, exciting, and in alignment with the life we really want to live otherwise we'll find a way to sabotage it and you deserve better than that.

The BIGGEST thing that seperates a true, successful entrepreneur from the pack - commitment.

There are three levels of desire that every single person experiences:

  • Wanting.  When someone says they want to do something to make it happen.
  • Choosing. Someone will act upon their wants and maybe get a website and put out an offer or even get their first client, but when things get hard, the self doubt swallows them and they give up.
  • Commitment. The true entrepreneur lives the ones who are so committed to building their business nothing can stop them.

For the committed entrepreneur quitting is not an option. Even when it feels like nothing is happening, even when it feels like the world is crashing down around them, even when they have nothing, even when they are putting more in than they are getting out, they keep going because the vision they have is bigger than all of those things. It’s bigger than them and they know with zero doubts, the amazing and incredible impact they will have on the world.
