This is a quick list of things that all entrepreneurs need to know but not too many talk about. Some are things I didn't realize I was signing up for but are crucial to being successful.
First, I did not realize as an entrepreneur you have to look inside of yourself more often than you are comfortable with because this is where most of the answers are.
Not one second did I believe that I would think that starting my business. We think that we have an awesome idea and that we’re awesome at what we do and think people will just come, but they don’t. This is not a business of dreams, if you build it, they will not necessarily just come. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen for some people, but for most of us it doesn’t happen. 80% of the reason for that is us. There’s nothing wrong with us, but there’s so much growth and so much self development that happens. Look inside of you more often because that’s where all the answers are and it’s going to get uncomfortable as f*ck. Trust me it’s where you need to look.
Second, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
You have to be okay with saying this scares the sh/t out of me and I’m going to do it anyways. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable because that’s where the growth happens. Taking the step into the unknown and not knowing what’s going to happen is scary as fck, but how else are you going to know what's going to happen? That’s where the growth and clarity comes. If you’re scared, do it. If you’re angry, do it. Just do it.
Third, 80 to 90% of being a successful entrepreneur is not what you do, it’s how you think.
I am a huge proponent of mindset and shifting your perspective and thinking about things a different way. When I say mindset, I don’t mean happy rainbows and we’re going to jump on the back of our unicorn and shoot sprinkles and glitter on the way to the next client. What I mean is that having a shift in perspective and how you see and think about things is paramount in your success. It’s about where you’re going, where you are right now, how you are being present and how you are being, period. How you think about where you’re going and what you’re doing now can all get freaking overwhelming that you throw your hands up sometimes and you go, “I’m done. I don't want to do this anymore, it's too hard.” It’s going to get hard I’m not gonna lie. You're going to get confused, you're going to get overwhelmed. What are you gonna do with those feelings? That is the key, my friend. What are you going to do about being stuck? Are you going to still take that step forward or are you going to go nope I’m done. If you really want to be done, then be done. Everyone’s journey is different, but if you really want it and you can see what your future holds for you, the impact that you bring to people, the change that you can create in the world then keep going.
Why do you get up in the morning? What fuels your life? Think about how you are thinking when you’re in those places of stuck or overwhelm or stress or anxiety? Try to catch yourself when you feel like you're in it and ask yourself, “Who am I being right now and who do I want to be being?” Try to shift your perspective to that person.
Fourth, you have to be open to new opportunities even if you’re not looking for them.
Things will be placed in front of you all the time. Some of those opportunities will be opportunities you want, some of them will be opportunities that you don’t want. Choose carefully which opportunities you take because if you say yes to one thing, you’re saying no to something else and vice versa. Weigh those opportunities and decide if it’s going to move the needle in your business in a positive way. If it is, great. Then it’s probably a good opportunity. If it's not in alignment with your business, if it’s heavy and it feels like it’s going to take too much time away from the things that will move your business forward, then you probably want to pass on that. You have to be okay with saying no and be okay with saying yes. Just weigh your options.
Five, building quality relationships with other entrepreneurs is essential to your success.
You need to have a community over competition mindset. There is room for everybody even if you're doing the same thing. You do it differently than the other person does. We’re all different, and we all approach things in different ways. We have a different course of action. We can think differently than the next person and nobody’s better than anybody else. You’re going to resonate with those that are attracted to you somehow. There are other people who do the same thing you do because something resonates with them personally. I have found that creating relationships with other business owners and even other people that do the exact same thing I do, has been incredible. Being an entrepreneur can be lonely. It’s always good to have someone to call for a cup of coffee and ask their opinion or vent. Because they are an entrepreneur too, they can give you a different perspective. Just make friends, make connections and this is not a competition there's room for everybody at the top.
Six, you have to sell.
This was hard for me. For some reason, sales makes me feel icky. It makes me feel sleazy like I’m going to sell you something. I feel like a door to door salesman with a vacuum cleaner. My experience with sales people who are trying to sell you something without having that relationship with you is icky. Which is why one of my core values in life and business is connection and relationship building. I will not just sign a client for coaching without talking to them first because how do I know that this really will work? There are people that will be better served by going to somebody else and I’m sure that there are people that would get on the phone call with me and decide to choose somebody else and that's fine. It doesn't mean anything about me, it means they need something different. But you have to sell. Selling is an exchange of energy. I’m going to give you my energy to provide you with what you need in the space and time you need it and you are giving me energy back in the form of money. It's a tool to get what you want. It's a tool to help other people. That's what money is. It's a constant flow of energy that provides you with necessities, lifestyle and opportunities to help other people.
Seven, you have to market.
You have to get yourself out there, people have to know who you are, they have to know you’re there. If nobody knows you're there, nobody's going to come. Those are 2 things people cringe about, sales and marketing. I remember my face, I was like, I don't wanna do that, I don't even know how to do that. Never mind doing it, I don't know how and I don't want to, but you have to. That is how your business creates revenue and income and that's how it keeps going.
Eight, You have to put yourself out there.
Nine, you have to be open and coachable.
This doesn't mean you have to have a coach, it means you have to be willing to learn and be open to other people's suggestions and criticisms, coming from the right people. If you're asking somebody for advice, accept the advice you're given. It doesn't mean you have to act on it, if that's not what you want, but you always have to have an open mind about somebody else’s perspective, thought processes, regular processes or any of those types of things if they are willing to help you, be open. Invest in yourself and in your business. Be ready to learn. Whether it's the free stuff on youtube or google or facebook lives or IG lives or posts or the freebies you're signing up for. If you're gonna sign up for them, read them. One of those things can be a goldmine for you. Be willing to invest the time, energy and money into yourself and your business. That's what's going to help you create impact and transformation and happiness for more people. Be aware you‘re never going to stop learning something. So be open and be coachable.
Ten, make self-development a priority.
You will reject this at first because you’ve trained your brain your entire life, from the day you were born, from the second you said you’re going to be an entrepreneur, to think in a certain way. You have lived from core beliefs that were instilled in you from a very young age and you don't even realize you're living from them because they're so ingrained in your subconscious. I’m not saying they’re wrong, it’s just the way you’ve lived your life and now you're going to shift to a whole different way of life. Self development is key to success and you are now asking your brain to think differently. You have to give it some time to catch up. Don’t get frustrated when you know the self development book says do this or do that, or think this way or think that way, it's going to take time and it’s constant forever work. The more you do it, the easier it gets.Self development is another key to this lock of success that we feel like we have because really success is not locked. Success is there for you to take anytime you want, you just have to do the work. You don't just sit on the couch and say I want a ferrari and one appears, it doesn't work like that. You put something out into the universe and say this is what I want, or say this is what I’m envisioning for my life, my business, my personal finances, my business finances and and the universe starts working in a way you want it to because its neutral or whatever you want to call it, sources, god, universe, energy, it wants to give you everything you have to still take the actions to get it. The goal with self development is to just be a little bit better than the day you were before. It's not going to happen overnight, you still have to do the work.
